Back Eligibility Requirements

Applications are encouraged from candidates from all countries and all universities. Applications are particularly encouraged from under-represented groups within their respective disciplines.

To be eligible for a Fellowship by Examination you must fulfil the following eligibility requirements:

You have never been appointed to a permanent academic post in an institution of higher education.

Your main subject of study does not fall within Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Classics, History (including Medieval History 370AD - 1400AD, History, Early Modern 1400AD - 1800AD and History, Modern, post 1800AD), Linguistics & Philology, Mathematics, Neuroscience, Medicine & Biomedical Sciences and Music.

You should hold, or be close to completion of, a doctorate. If you have not formally submitted your doctoral thesis at the time of application, you will be expected to do so before taking up the post.

If you formally submitted your doctoral thesis for viva voce examination before 1 July 2022, you are not eligible unless there are strong mitigating circumstances, such as:

  • parental leave
  • family commitments
  • illness
  • other exceptional circumstances
